In Section 1, I outline Bain's life and the history of the publication of his well-known textbook The Emotion and the Will. In Sections 2 and 3, I consider the varying estimations of Bain's work (especially his theory of emotion) in the history of psychology. In Section 4, I discuss the Japanese translations of words related to emotion, and in Section 5, I clarify the origin of Bain's three divisions of the mind and the influence of his theory in Japan.
