This was observed even \nin Japan, where the use of computers for learning has been less popular, \ncompared to other Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development \n(OECD) countries. Previous studies have revealed that, online learning is \nadvantageous in terms of flexibility, reduced costs, and increased free time.\nObjective: This study examines the contributing factors and impacts of online learning \nduring the COVID-19 pandemic on student learning behavior and academic \nachievement.\nM e t h o d s: Study participants included professors from a private university in Osaka. \nIn this study, the participant observation method was primarily employed \nas the research method. For some classes, changes in study time and grade \ndistribution before and after the pandemic were also estimated.\nR e s u l t s: The results suggest that the academic achievements of undergraduate \nstudents remained consistent or improved during the COVID-19 pandemic. \nSuch achievements stemmed from promoting interactive teaching strategies, \nproviding audio and video materials for learning and frequent and timely \nfeedback provided to students, which strengthened their learning motivation \nand academic performance. In some cases, study time outside of class \nincresed compared to the pre-pandemic period. Accordingly, the quality of\nstudents’ term papers also improved. Furthermore, the use of a Learning \nManagement System (LMS) reduced instructors’ burden of preparing \nteaching materials, assignments, and reports; grading; and providing feedback \nto students. Students were also encouraged to ask questions through the \nLMS during some classes. However, some students may need to work on \ntheir Information and communications technology, and time management \nskills, to benefit from online learning.\nConclusion: Online learning offers many advantages, and it can generally improve \nstudents’ academic achievement. Moreover, this study discovers that the \nexisting instructional design of face-to-face classroom learning is applicable \nto online courses’ instructional design as well. To understand the effects \nof online learning more rigorously, adequate quantitative data need to be \ncollected.
