Obviously, the teaching of other languages\nhas many common points with English-language education, and we can borrow\nmany useful methods from it. However, each language has its own peculiarities\nwhich must be taken into consideration when teaching. In addition, the\n‘distance’ between the students’ first language and their second languages\nseriously affects their study of the latter.\nIn order to identify such peculiarities and the ‘distance’ between Italian and\nJapanese, I carried out interviews with Italian-language teachers working for\nlanguage schools in Italy. All of them have experience with Japanese students\nand are aware of the differences between them and other nationalities in the\nclass. Through these interviews, it became clear that, compared with both\nWesterners and other Asians such as Chinese and Koreans, Japanese students\nhave much less difficulty with Italian pronunciation, and are more earnest in\nstudying Italian grammar. On the other hand, they are more likely than others\nto make syntactic errors and to suffer from insufficient vocabulary, which often\nhinders them both in comprehension and in expression. However, probably\nthe greatest obstacle for Japanese students is a lack of communicativeness, a\nresult of their cultural background and the linguistic peculiarities of their first\nlanguage.\nIt goes without saying that language teachers must be conscious of such advantages\nand disadvantages on the part of the students.
