 note = {This paper deals the history of Japanese academic librarians’ status before
and after the 2nd World War. Library Statute in Japan has regulated public libraries,
not academic libraries. Therefore academic librarians have been controlled
as general office workers, not as professionals. Iwasaru, who was a
top-ranked employee at one of the best university library, had endeavored to
enhance the status of academic library workers in this country. The author,
who had worked as an academic library worker almost 40 years, will try to describe
the changing images around Japanese university librarians. At last, the
professionality of present academic library workers in Japan is not so high, and
remains halfway.},
