This in turn led to the challenge of adapting or creating\ncourses for the online environment without the benefit of experience to fall\nback on.\nThis research paper describes a piece of action research exploring the reactions\nof a group of Japanese university students to a bespoke online course.\nThe course was designed specifically to work in the online learning environment\nand was produced with the aim of increasing students’ motivation,\ntheir ability to collaborate and to learn independently. A more traditional,\ntextbook-based course was also taught online to the same group of students\nand so opinions were canvassed on this as well. This course was taught in\nlargely the same manner that it would have been in a regular, bricks-andmortar\nclassroom. Although this is more of an exploratory study than a\npiece of comparative research, comparisons between the two courses have\nbeen made where relevant.\nStudents were surveyed at the beginning and the end of the course to determine\nthe extent to which they enjoyed each course, their perception of the\nability to collaborate, to learn English, their motivation, time spent in front\nof a screen and several other factors. Alongside this. the teacher as an active\nparticipant observed and also reported his findings to provide additional\nqualitative context to the observations and experiences of the students.\nStudents indicated a clear preference for the online bespoke course. It was\nevident from their qualitative feedback that they enjoyed making the presentations\nand learning presentation skills, having a lot of chance to speak\nEnglish, and developing topic-specific and complex vocabulary. They also\nfound the online course to be both collaborative and motivating.
