Food safety accidents had been frequented in China since its opening up and reform; in particular, the major food safety accidents that occurred often since the 21st century had not only caused severe physical damage to victims and hurt the feelings of Chinese people much, but also marred China’s international image. To address food safety problems, Chinese governments made active endeavors to perfect laws and regulations on food safety and improve its inspection mechanisms. These efforts have yielded good results. Supervised by the laws and guided by the governments, agriculture-related personnel and food enterprises actively introduced new production and processing systems to improve product quality. In the main parts of this paper, China’s food safety problems in the 2010s are considered, their causes are explored, major accidents are recounted, the responses from governments and enterprises are summarized. On this basis, the reality of China’s food safety is further examined to find out study focuses and their solutions in the future. First, we discussed the history and current status of food safety in China in chronological order at three development stages: food quantity safety, food quality safety, and food sustainability safety. In particular, he described the current status of fertilizer and pesticide use, food safety law, corporate ethics, and strict supervision of social cooperation. To address recurrent food safety issues, the Chinese government is actively encouraging the development of new types of agricultural businesses, promoting standardized vegetable production, establishing and improving agricultural safety tracking systems, etc. Implemented a series of policies and measures in rural areas. In this way, it not only ensured food safety in China, but also promoted agricultural modernization and sustainable development. Thanks to years’ efforts from all sectors of society, food safety has improved a lot. However, new questions arise as to the exact impacts of the new laws and agricultural polices as well as experimental models on agricultural production and food safety, whether favorable conditions are offered to the new-type agricultural businesses in practice, and the application of the agricultural product tracking system, etc. The answers need to be found out through follow-up on-site investigations in food companies and vegetable production bases.
