The people who inhabit\nthe area adjacent to the border on both the Indonesian and the Timor-\nLeste sides have devised over the years numerous methods to cross it\nand easily go back and forth, skillfully using both legal and illegal means.\nThe author, on the other hand, being a foreigner, simply could not do the\nsame.\n　The purpose of this paper is to reconfirm - not from the point of\nview of the people living there, but from the experiences of the author\nhimself - the fact that an international border of a modern state is a social\nconstruct. And, at the same time, we shall see that in the framework of\na fieldwork conducted by a cultural anthropologist, the position of the\nfieldworker and the position of those around him can never be the same,\nthat he can never behave like them, no matter how hard he tries.
