内容記述 | The purpose of this paper is to show how EFL learners process written English sentences, using eye movement data recorded via an eye movement tracking system (EMR-8 manufactured by NAC Image Technology Inc.). This research focuses on eye fixations and regressions which occur while reading garden path sentences. In the experiment, participants' eye movements were monitored as they read 51 sentences, including 32 garden path or controlled sentences and 19 filler sentences, displayed on a screen in random order. In the current study, we selected eye movement data of ten participants randomly, and analyzed their fixation and eye regression patterns, pursuing their eye movement tracks shown on the table. The results of the regression analysis and implications for language teaching may be summarized as follows: 1. Japanese EFL learners process English written sentences using syntactic rules. They seem to refer to constituent units in a sentence. 2. A large body of research indicates that in order for EFL learners to utilize semantic factors, they must know almost all the words in a sentence. In this present study, it seems that we could find evidence for this idea. Inevitably, the importance of vocabulary knowledge was confirmed. 3. It seems to be clear that pragmatic information reduces garden path effect. Teaching materials should be provided in view of background knowledge of the learners and the context of those materials should be greatly considered. 4. Even intermediate or advanced learners have difficulty in processing sentences with particular structures. Explicit instructions and appropriately designed classroom activities are required according to developmental stages of the learners. | |||||
