| 内容記述 | The aim of this paper is to examine how the ethnic magazines in Taiwan are concerned with the daily lives of Indonesian migrant workers, whose number has increased recently to amount to 154,596 in 2010, and how they help them to extend their networks among the Indonesians working in Taiwan. Over 70 % of those workers are women who are hired as caregivers to look after the sick and elderly but are forced to do other types of domestic work by their employers. By focusing on the Indonesian-language magazines published in Taipei, I highlight how Indonesian female workers utilize them to survive their harsh labor conditions binding them to the employers' home. In Taiwan, nine magazines targeted at Indonesian migrants are published regularly. Every magazine provides some pages in which readers can find some personal information, for example, names, photos, addresses and telephone numbers of the subscribers. By using them, the readers can look for new friends they can communicate with via hand phone because they are not permitted to go out even on weekends. Also, the magazines provide not only articles for entertainment and information but also pages provided for contributions by the subscribers. Some write short stories and poems based on their diverse experiences among Taiwanese families, whose culture is alien to them. The opportunities to publish their writings help them to extend their networks among the Indonesian community in Taiwan. | |||||
