After the disaster in March 2011, many of the students made trips to the damaged area to help clear the tsunami damaged coastal region. They also worked in Osaka to provide support for those victims who arrived in the city after fleeing from the disaster. What did those college students experience, learn, and gain from their volunteer work? As a result of their voluntary participation, the students learned to work for others in need at a level they had never experienced in their lives; feeling their own personal growth from this experience. The university\u0027s Office for Supporting Voluntary Work by Students provided a great deal of information for volunteering in the disaster area, along with financial support for the students\u0027 trips to the northeastern part of Japan. The office created these programs for students after March 2011, as part of the university\u0027s service learning credits courses. A year later, we examined the students\u0027 volunteer program applications and records during and after their participation. Findings suggest that the vast majority of students were highly satisfied with their experience. They clearly indicated that they would continue providing support to the victims with continuing care. Students who participated in short-term programs showed 1) self-satisfaction and self-realization from meeting their own goals, 2) improvement of communication skills, 3) and the feeling of social recognition and of self-worth. The long-term participants showed 4) improvement in their abilities to solve problems and 5) increased respect of others.
