内容記述 | With the rapidly declining and ageing population of mountainous villages in Japan, out-migrants who have left their parents in the village have drawn attention among supporters of village revitalization. This study explores the social effect of such out-migrants' visits to their village of origin and the factors influencing out-migration by analysing questionnaire survey data, interview data and local historical documents from mountainous villages in Shizuoka Prefecture. Out-migrants' visits to their village of origin largely has a stabilizing social effect on parental lives given that out-migrants shop for and repair the houses of their parents in the depressed villages. Although some outmigrants from wealthy families have supported family businesses in the villages, migrants willing to return permanently are rare in general. Migrants' visits have contributed indirectly to maintaining villages through their efforts in helping their parents stay there. However, this indirect effect will cease after the end of the ageing parental generation if other measures to continue out-migrants' visits to their village of origin do not exist. Our analysis reveals two factors influencing out-migration of the young generation: the local labour market and social class. Firstly, the mountainous villages that we researched have a developed local labour market in the industrial Tokai area, so the young generation has numerous job opportunities without having to move to distant metropolises such as Tokyo or Osaka. Young out-migrants have tended to live in cities near their village of origin and are therefore able to visit and support their parents frequently. Secondly, social class has a limited influence. The wealthier the parents, the farther away their children tend to migrate. Although the destinations of migrating children vary by social class, it is notable that most parents have at least one child living near them. This implies that the children have decided where to live according to a division of roles among their siblings. Further, the responsibility of staying close to the parents is not limited to daughters or the eldest son. | |||||
