内容記述 Quite a few motives for Saigyo's renouncing the world have been pointed out. For instance, his lost love for Taikenmoninshoshi is one of them. It is said that she accepted him as a lover only once and refused him ever after. However, it is very difficult to verify that he had an affair with her, though there is a lot of circumstantial evidence. It is also said that the sudden death of one of his cousins brought home to him the ephemerality of life. During the age he lived in, historic events as well as natural disasters took place one after another that shook the very foundations of society. This must have made him all the more pessimistic. He was inclined toward Buddhism. When he was 23 years old, he, elite soldier, turned bonze, renouncing the world. Then, he devoted himself to hard disciplines not only of Buddhism (including Shugendo) but also of Shinto. Most of his waka are very beautiful, poetic, and moving. He is a genius. He is one of the most popular national poets. As many as ninety-four of his waka won acceptance into Kokinwakashu. He ranked with the best as a poet. He loved cherry blossoms and the moon dearly. One of his waka is as follows: I wish to die under cherry blossoms at the time of the full moon of February (of the lunar calendar). He died on the 16th of February (of the lunar calendar) 1190, exactly the date on which he had wished to die. It is the same date as that of Buddha's obit.
