内容記述 | This research paper investigates whether participation in an extensive reading program could cause reduction in negative attitudes towards reading in English among first year university students at a university in Japan. From 2017, extensive reading became a unified component of compulsory English classes for all students in all faculties and departments. Students were expected to complete 30,000 words worth of reading( approximately 200 minutes) using graded readers over each semester. There was a wide range of initial ability/motivation levels of students, variation in class content across faculties etc., and 60,000 words was not thought a sufficient amount to cause measurable change in the actual English abilities of students such as accuracy, vocabulary and language processing with a sufficient degree of reliability and validity. Therefore, the researchers decided to focus on the emotional aspects (affective factors) of the extensive reading program. Students were asked to answer an identical questionnaire at three different times regarding their attitudes to reading in English, at the beginning and end of the first semester, and at the end of the second semester. The change in responses over the three questionnaires indicated that over the course of two semesters, negative attitudes towards reading in English slightly decreased overall. Statistical analysis of the results indicates that participating in an extensive reading program has the potential to lower the affective filter of students who are reluctant to read in English, and hopefully lead to positive attitudinal change towards English study in the long term. |
